BBC Climate Challenge is a fun, web-based policy simulation game where the player can act as the leader of the European Union and select policies until the year 2100 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time making sure there is enough energy, water and food for the people, and retaining enough popularity to remain in the office. It is an intelligent and actual (relying on e.g  dioxide emission forecasts produced by the IPCC) role-play game that introduces you to decision-making on national and global scale.

Gameplay

Choose which policies to implement in 5 different areas such as Industry,Trading, National, Local and Household, taking into account their diverse impacts on government expenses, energy and food production, water use, CO2 emissions, public opinion etc.

See the results of the implementation of the chosen policy package, including CO2 emissions, unexpected climate change related events, a summary newspaper and public opinion on regarding your political choices.

Influence global climate change policy by negotiating with leaders from other continents and deciding on your long term emission reduction targets.

You go through 10 similar rounds to understand the impacts of your choices and to adapt to changing circumstances.

Climate Challenge gives the player a basic understanding of the impacts of climate change.

But mostly it helps to raise awareness of different (climate) policy options available for the governments as well as to understand the diverse impacts of implementing them.

It also gives a sense of the challenges faced in the global climate negotiations.

Trivia

In its first week of launching, the game received an amazing 82,000 unique plays and the totals for the first six weeks were over 500,000 unique plays.

Many players have complained that the mechanism the game uses to measure wealth, or the health of the economy, is faulty and not very realistic. According to the developers, the game was meant to have a different system of measuring the health of the economy, but deadlines prevented the final version from including the more accurate system.
